I've only seen it a couple of times and it left no impression on me at all.

I thought I might like it because, from descriptions of it, it sounded like nonsense humor I used to write when I was in middle school.
Then I watched it (my brother has a couple of the DVD sets) and thought, "Hmm, a middle schooler could have written this." It was not funny at all, and nearly unwatchable. I like entertainment writing to show some evidence of wit or talent or effort, which you don't get with complete nonsense. I thought I went into more detail in an earlier post, when the viewing experience was more fresh in my mind, but can't find it. One specific episode I do remember was the Broodwitch, and it wasn't just not funny, it was actively tedious and annoying. They listed the haunted ingredients of the sandwitch, and then they just kept listing more. That does not qualify as a joke in any sense. I don't know where this "tedious = funny" formula for humor has come from. 8-Bit Theater seems to use it as one of its guiding principles, too. |

I only watched the first volume, and actually don't remember much about it. What I remember of it, it didn't make me cringe and convulse like Robot
Chicken did, but I'd probably still give it a mild thumb's down.

I haven't seen it recently, but I enjoyed watching it for a while. I checked out some of the newer ones recently and didn't really care for them. I
don't know if that's because they've gotten worse or if I've just outgrown it.

I actually don't actively hate this show, but I've seen some episodes that were just unwatchable. And how did they get their own movie? I actually
tried watching it when it came on Cartoon Network one day, and it literally made me angry. What a waste of time.
There's a ATHF game, too. It's some racing thing. I've heard it's really, really bad... no surprise there.

I used to watch it a lot, but then after a while the episodes stopped being funny.
It's still incredibly popular, though - just check the Adult Swim comedy boards. |

Please, no, that's one message board on the internet I never want to see.

I used to hang out at the Incoherent Babbling board at the Adult Swim website a lot. Funny thing is, it may have been called IB but the people who made most
sense were usually there.

Crawl and 1OOO wrote:On this subject, where did the "noisy = funny" formula for humor come from? The very early Freakazoids pissed me off because of this. Spongebob Squarepants hinges on this mentality. And last night while I was eating a sandwhich I turned on Cartoon Network and there was some pirate cartoon on. This one pirate who looks like a giant green gumdrop with Mr. Potato Head parts stuck on bets his partner in a poker game, asks him to do "his thing" which just a really long belch with the wobbly lips stunt I might have found funny when I was ten, the other pirates fold, but then this yeti takes his bet by yelling "PAIR OF TWOOOOOOOOOSSSS!!!" Then the little pirate buddy starts wailing because the Mr. Potato Head pirate bet him in a poker game. Yeah, I turned it off there.

Captain Ladd Spencer wrote:That sounds like The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack. The entire premise of that show is rather questionable. I mean, the set-up is of a strange old man leading a much younger boy (not to mention that the younger boy wears a sailor outfit) away from his home with promises of candy. Yeah...

I watched Flapjack the other day. I don't know what possessed me to do it. But I noticed that the show doesn't even follow any sort of logic
whatsoever. Not even cartoon logic, or its own kind of internal logic. Things just... happen. For no reason. One of the episodes I saw started with Flapjack
thinking he had gone blind, and ended with a whale getting a haircut from a barber who was also a doctor, and had a "barbershop quartet" group of
henchmen.

That sounds like The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack. You also don't need a title that frikken' long. Just "Flapjack" would do. |

Next you'll say "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle" could have just been called "Frances Farmer".
Or "Seattle". Or "Revenge!" Or "Farmer!" "Of the three ways in which men think that they acquire a knowledge of things--authority, reasoning, and experience--only the last is effective and able to bring peace to the intellect." -Roger Bacon |

Don't you dare try to shorten the title of "The Sidelong Glances of a Pigeon Kicker."

Everybody's got something to hide except for me and my monkey.
If there was a show just called "Flapjack" that wasn't about the delicious breakfast treat sweetened with maple syrup, I'd be gravely disappointed. |

I don't mind long titles where they're creative or catchy, but "The Marvelous Misadventures of" is so generic it feels tacked on for the sake
of having a long title.
If there was a show just called "Flapjack" that wasn't about the delicious breakfast treat sweetened with maple syrup, I'd be gravely disappointed. Well, any show with "Flapjack" in the title anywhere has already gone that route. |

Bah. Other people hype AQTH up to me, and then I just go "Not interested." They then act like I have insulted their comedy god.
Then again, I'm forgetting how the shows generally pander to people with simple ideas of humor. My own demand for absurdist surreal dark bizarro humor has no place in the mainstream, usually. |

I think I just saw the most offensive episode of ATHF last night, where Shake gets bitten by a "radioactive black man" and then turns black. Ugh. It
was horrible. And not funny at all. It was like playing a game of "spot the stereotype." Because stereotypes are so funny, ha ha ha.
Then I watched the episode of Futurama where Bender gets a sex change, and was less offended by that. Probably because Futurama is actually funny.
